Sleeping in the Forest, Mary Oliver
I thought the earth
remembered me, she
took me back so tenderly, arranging
her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds. I slept
as never before, a stone
on the riverbed, nothing
between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated
light as moths among the branches
of the perfect trees. All night
I heard the small kingdoms breathing
around me, the insects, and the birds
who do their work in the darkness. All night
I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling
with a luminous doom. By morning,
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.
this little beauty is number two on my list of poetry to memorize.

knitter
She is just the coolest knitter ever, don't you think? I hope I look half as cool as her while I'm knitting. But I'm doubtful...

Just in case...
It's very unlikely, I know, but just in case you haven't heard, I wanted to let you know that this show is AMAZING. Seriously.
The second season aired on PBS Masterpiece a couple weeks ago, and I have been losing myself in the magnificent sets and costumes. Ah, the costumes!
If you can find no other reason to love this show, there's always this lady. Maggie Smith is the best.

SNOW
I woke up Saturday morning to the sound of shovels scraping the sidewalk. Music to my ears!
Cold weather does not feel so cold when there's snow falling. It's far more enchanting.
And tomorrow we head back up to 50 degrees. It's been lovely while it's lasted, anyway.

Have a wonderful weekend
Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.

This time last year...
This time last year we were covered in snow. I am so ready for it. Come on, Snow!

Central Park, Variation on a theme
I went for a walk around Central Park last weekend as well, using this fun iApp by Bluebrain, called Central Park (Listen to the Light). "It uses a global positioning network to activate different themes as the listener wanders through the park. The app contains more than 400 tracks, each tied to a location. They were written to fit together harmonically like a sonic jigsaw puzzle."
I have to admit that I often find the GPS stuff creepy, but this was pretty cool. It was fascinating to hear the different musical themes layering and changing as I ventured from one area of the park to the next.

Poetry
I've decided I want to be a little old-fashioned and memorize some of my favorite poems. (You never know when you'll need them, right?) I've started compiling a list, and this one is at the top.
What are some of your favorites?

e.e. cummings, in time of daffodils
in time of daffodils(who know the goal of living is to grow) forgetting why, remember how in time of lilacs who proclaim the aim of waking is to dream, remember so(forgetting seem) in time of roses(who amaze our now and here with paradise) forgetting if, remember yes in time of all sweet things beyond whatever mind may comprehend, remember seek(forgetting find) and in a mystery to be (when time from time shall set us free) forgetting me, remember me

Moroccan Court
This past Saturday I went to the Met to see the New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia which reopened in November after extensive renovation. It was beautiful!
The Moroccan Court was especially impressive. The video below takes you through the creation of the Court. Wow.
The Damascus Room was utterly amazing as well. This video shows the removal and reinstallation of the reception area within a Syrian home from the Ottoman Period.
Definitely a worthwhile visit!
